Roddy and Juvenile Diabetes

Born to a mother of Native American descent, young Roddy Pippin was a free spirit in the plains of north Texas.  That is, until one day at age six when he became ill and wasn’t getting any better.  The diagnosis – type 1 diabetes with a rare complication known as Somogyi effect.  Young Roddy’s life immediately changed forever.

As a severely “brittle” diabetic, Roddy would be sickened when his blood sugars would spike, requiring up to six daily shots of life-saving insulin.  And he would literally drop to the ground convulsing when his blood sugars fell sharply.  Each such event was a terrifying ordeal for his mother as she would frantically administer glucose between his locked teeth in a desperate effort to raise his sugars and save his life.
